Jet Fly-In Midlands MFC 13/14th June 2009

A few of us travelled south once again for the Jet Fly-in at the Midlands MFC site in Co. Offaly.

Forecast looked iffy, but the day turned out to be great with plenty of sunshine and a nice wind. Only late in the day we got a bit of rain, but it dried up again for a few more flights before we all packed up about Six.

It was a really enjoyable day at a great site, and the Midlands Club fed us well with burgers, Only managed Three flights with the Bobcat myself due to gear problems but enjoyed every one :-)

A good range of Jets and other models, pity more of the 'down South' Jet flyers did'nt turn up they missed a good day.

Of course there was also some Funjet (ducks) flying although Harry's didnt last long when he lost site of his own laughing so much at Robert having a mid air with mine ! serves him right, blammed me too, recons too get his own back at the indoor on wednesday night !

Lots of flying was done, and Harry and Robert were even trying some Jet formation flying

Andreas and Hajo from the midlands club each flew a Boomerang sprint, very similar to the standard Boomerang but the military covering makes them look much better in the air (if it had a pilot in the cockpit :-)

Harry's Boomerang coming into land, (Harry clocked up the most flights (7) of the day - yet again!)

Roberts Harpoon about to make a perfect touch down on the nice grass

Peter Carson flew his very fast Boomerang Elan

The Club shelter proved very useful late in the day when the rain came.

Apart from Jets some other models also flew, This Big Corsair looked and sounded the part in the air and belonged to Hajo Brandt (no thats not him, he is only there to give the model scale)

Hajo also had a very nice Eurofighter which never flew unfortunatly.

Some helis also flew, Robert brought his petrol powered Bell 47 and a few other scale bodied electric Helis, Gordon had his wren powered turbine helicopter and Harry flew his Hughes.

Area Scale New Buildings 30th May 2009

2009 Area Scale was the best ever with superb weather and over 50 models on show.

The NW club put on a great day with plenty of food and refreshments.
Large varriety of models from 12ft Piper Cub to a Turbine Jet

It was great to see the scale event well attended and mainly due to members of the NW club promoting it prior to the event.

The Members have also done a lot of work to the site, with a new runway added to allow for the cross wind and run off areas from the Tarmac

Along with his familular big Piper Cub John McGonagle brought along the Amelia Earhart Vega which he is in the middle of getting airworthy again

One thing was clear during the banter, we have to organise more scale events.

The Drummonds Catalina which took the DR Kinsella trophy

Gordon, Myself and Stanley with mouths full enjoying the BBQ, Note the clever one that brought a chair !

Aurther Morrows Hurricane which got the best static model

Clifford McElwee also claimed a prize for his ME110

IMAC N. Ireland 23-24th May 2009

IMAC UK first visit to N.Ireland was setup and run by our local IMAC Champion Pilot Mathew Poots.

The event was held at Tyrella in Co. Down. Tyrella is a new club setup by members from the UMAC club and is on a polo ground beside the beach.   It is a great flying site away from everything and you can basically fly any direction you want on normal days due to the vastness of the area around you.

IMAC N.Ireland was the second round of the IMAC UK championship and Mathew had organised some great prizes for the Winners and the raffles.(which included DA engines and specktrum radios) and many of the top pilots were there.

Some of our Local pilots who qualified from the first round of the NIAA at Ballymoney were there and done very well.

Gordon McCrea and caller Harry Reid from the Kestrals MFC flew well with an electric Extra to win the Basic class

Richard McMasters Ballymoney MFC flew brilliantly with his Carden Yak to win the Sportsman Class

Andrew Wallace also from Ballymoney MFC got second place in the Basic Class and David McLean (Daves RC Models) not shown got third.

Mathew won both the Unlimited class and the Free style which he is flying here with his Hanger 9 Sukhoi. Other pictures of this model below.

The freestyle to music was the most enjoyable to watch, all the competitors done a great job, Mathew and Simon McNeill's displays were very impressive great control over thier models.

Steve Mallinder from England got second in the Unlimited Class with his very nice and chunky Yak

Real Nice paint job on this model from one of the UK competitors, bady missing a pilot in the cockpit to set it off.

Mathew had orgainised some very good prizes from his sponsors for the raffle on both days.

Gordon won this cap in the raffle and left the number on it as he said it brought him luck, which must be true as he won his Class !

David Drummond's freestyle display was also very good and the streamers on the wing tips were very effective, have to try it out :-)
If you look below you can see the streamer caught in the elevator hinge, thats why you use paper streamers !

Some other pictures from the Saturday shown below

3DX Ireland 2009 Heli Comp Craigavon 16-17th May 2009

Very Proud moment for Letterkenny Model Fying Club as our own Shane McGirr takes the 2009 3DX crown at Craigavon.

Shane put on a great display for the crowd and everyone thought he was a worthy winner.

It is a great achievement for a Lad of 13 who has only been flying Heli's since Jan 2008.
Shane was flying a std Raptor 50, when most of his competitors had upto date and hi-spec helis like the Trex 6 & 700's.

Many times 3D masters winner Duncan Osborne was one of the Demo pilots that travelled over from the UK and put on a great display of very smooth and accurate 3d flying.

Ireland's John O'Rurke kept everyone entertained with his demo flights.

Lee Currie is only 9 yrs old. His TREX 600 is bigger than he is :-)

Pictured below low and inverted and with Shane and PJ Harte, One to watch in the future.

Irish Scale Association Fly-In Curragh, Co. Kildare 3rd May 2009

When speaking to Eamonn Keenan on the phone on Friday night, he mentioned they were having their scale fly-in on Sunday and not getting to Popham (UK microlight show) I decided I would make the trip south, especially with the offer "you can stay with Me"!

It was about 20yrs ago that last flew at the Curragh, and anyone who has been there knows, it is a great site big and open, so I was looking forward to it.
You cant fly at the Curragh before 1pm due the horses, we arrived about that time and there was already a big turnout.

There was a lot of really nice scale models and it was great to meet up with friends and faces from the past, John Shortt, Tony Greene, Steve Quigley, Liam Jackson all long time scale modellers.
Flying was more or less non stop and was a real nice day apart from two short showers, and everyone seemed to have a good day.

Thanks again to Eamonn for his Hospitality and sorry for some reason I dont have a picture of your Citabria !

Some of models below, some details I know and some I dont!

Tony Greenes 1/4 scale Flair Fokker DR1 26cc petrol, really fancy one of those myself, next building project I think!
Lot bigger than it looks in this picture.

Liam Jacksons 1/4 scale piper Cub

Steve Quigleys Great Planes 1/5th scale Super Stearman

John Shortts 84" Sig Space Walker with 26cc petrol

Andy Ryan big 1/3rd scale Piper Cub

John & Paul Bryne had a Real nice large scale Waco YMF-5 from the German Barth Kit

This was a large Hanger 9 P47 81" Thunderbolt, looked great in the air with the bombs and tanks. Was never a fan of the P47 but can see its appeal now.

This large Fokker DVII is covered in a material you would think was a pair of curtains! but it is especially made for this version of the DVII in the USA by Arizona Models.

The remaining pics I took shown below.

Splash In Eskragh Lough 25th April 2009

First Splash-In of the year at Eskragh Lough.

The day started windy but soon settled down and a good bit of splashing was done.
There are four out on the flight line in this shot.

The usual floatplane models turned up
ARC ready2's, Cessena's & Seamasters.

The North Down Club always support Eskragh well.

Harry got the epoxy out and got his Laker airworthy again.

Harry also brought a nice electric flying boat which looked nice in the air, see picture lower down.

Stanley reckon's that his Ripamx trainer fly's better upside down now because of the floats!

My Seamaster is proving to be a great purchase, very stable both in the air and on the water.
Very reliable and short take-offs with the SC46 11x5 apc prop

Grant Capell Memorial Fly-In Letterkenny 19th April 2009

Our own first fly-in of the year was great sucess, weather was superb bar the cross wind but never stopped the flying which was non stop.
There was a very big turnout with a lot of models, I counted about 65 at one time during the day.

David Nolan put on his useual display of 3D heli flying as did Alwyn on the Ballymoney club and our own Shane (tic tock) McGirr

Place got very busy at one stage with quite a few spectators as well as flyers.

NWMAC members Tom, Ross and Paul brought a few nice models and seemed to enjoy the day, we had to kick Paul out in the end he was one of the last to leave !

The Ballymoney crew had some lovely big Biplanes and nice to see them all up together.
Andrews SE5A on the left, Cliffs Fokker DVII below left and Roberts Nieuport 28 under scrutiny below right. They are all Balsa USA Kits I think.

Cliff also brought his Glider tug and Andrew had his Disus glider and done a bit of glider towing which was great to watch. See pictures below the biplanes.

David from Daves RC models Enniskillen brought along some stuff to sell and got set up in the corner of the hanger.

Colin & Gerry from UMAC brought a very nice Tiger Moth and a GP Super Stearman

The Letterkenny boys with their models lined up along the Hanger

Peter Carson's Elan from the Langford Model club

One model that Ian Robb from the Langford club brought was his all foam F14 with swing wing mechanism which looked great in flight, see pictures below.
The tailcones look like after burners in the shot on the left.

Thanks to everyone that turned up to make it the great day it was !

See you all again in August.

Denis O'Hara Memorial Nutts Corner 13th April 2009

Easter Monday has always been about the Nutts Corner fly-in.
The day was nice but the wind blew and blew, which was a pity as there was a very good turnout at the new UMAC site which has a lot more space than the old one.
Most of the models stayed in the cars and the few that braved out, had to leave them upside down to prevent them from blowing away !

Mathew flew a couple of times with his lovely Sukhoi and going by his low level display I dont think he really knows what the wind is, I recon he thinks it is a substance that helps you hover !
Mr 3D David Nolan also flew with various Helis and Shane and Chris managed to get a flight in with theirs when the wind settled later in the day.

Did'nt take to many pics, there were a few nice models like this one belonging to Stephen Browne who also claimed the DOH trophy for the first Jet flight at the new site.

Hospitality was excellent with plenty of tea and buns and plenty of chatter at the side of the club house when sheltering from the wind.

Aerobatic Training Day 2 Dungannon 4th April 2009

Unfortunatly the second Aerobatic Training day was plagued with wind but a few models flew and Mathew gave us another great display this time with his Touson Shootout model fitted with a DA170

Aerobatic Training Day Dungannon 21st March 2009

Mathew Poots N.Irelands top IMAC pilot organised a aerobatic training day at the Dungannon MFC.

The main purpose of the day to help flyers with understanding the manouvers and the format both for the NIAA competitions and the forcoming round of the IMAC competion to be held in May

After explaining the Aresti for the basic Scedule, Mathew demonstrated the manouvers with his new Evolution 80cc powered Hanger 9 Sukhoi.

Mathew then gave us one of his superbly skillful displays, and afterwards spent some time with each flyer on the flightline which was very helpful for all.

Shane and Christopher from LMFC sitting back and enjoying the flying and the good weather (apart from the wind)

When Mathew was explaining the sportsman aresti, the rest of us who were not that advanced :-) got some flying in with the Funjets and wings !
One plane spotted was Eric Browns "Push me Pull me" Cessna Skymaster twin which was fitted with two 52 four strokes and looked great in the air.
